The Voynich Manuscript is a hand written and hand painted text from the 15th century of unknown origin. The pages feature botanical and floral illustrations of unidentified / made-up species surrounded by text in an unknown language / code. The Manuscript has captured the attention of many across the globe for its mystery and beautiful artistry. I am one of these people, I think the illustrations are so unique and timeless. They remind me of ancient botanical illustrations and make me think of plant life in sci-fi novels.
In the 2 hour art class students will use plants from the shop as references to create their own Voynich style painting. We’ll distress our own paper, scribble texts of our favorite poem or describe our plant in vivid detail before washing over it, and combine features of many different plants to create our own. There will be pages of the Manuscript for references as well as Jennie’s personal art book copy of the full script. This will be a creative, fun guided art session for all skill levels. By the end of class you will go home with a 8 x 10 Voynich style painting of your very own.
All art supplies will be provided including loose canvas, paint, brushes, glass palettes and water but please feel free to bring your own nature journal, sketchbook, preferred supplies.
